Early Reading Information

Reading

Learning to read is one of the most valuable skills that your child can acquire, as reading forms the base of every single lesson the children undertake. It is vitally important that we give your child the best start to their learning journey by delivering daily phonics lessons, as well as a number of guided early reading sessions a week. We teach reading and phonics using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised Scheme.  The children will also have additional reading sessions every week as part of their English lessons that explore reading skills such as prediction, retrieval and inference.

Supporting your child with reading

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.

There are two types of reading book that your child will bring home:

A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.

A sharing book (Unit 1 library book). Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.

The most beneficial thing you can do at home to support your child’s learning is to read with them for 15 minutes every day.

Changing Reading Books:

Reading books will be changed on Monday and the children will be also given the opportunity to change their Unit 1 library book as well.
