Reading Fluency

Little Wandle Reading Fluency Programme

We want all children to have the secure phonic knowledge needed to be able to read. But being a fluent reader is so much more. We make teaching reading our priority so that every child can unlock all aspects of reading. When we teach reading fluency, we do just that.

As they did throughout Reception and Year 1, all Year 2 children will begin in the Autumn term participating in the Early Reading Groups that sit alongside the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Phonics Programme. However, during Year 2 your child may graduate from the Early Reading Groups to the Little Wandle Fluency programme. As with the Early Reading Groups, Little Wandle Fluency will be taught in groups.

Little Wandle Fluency is for children who have completed Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised Phonics Programme and are secure at reading the final level of books. It is not for children who still need phonics instruction. Year 2 children will progress to the Fluency programme after they have been reading the Phase 5 Set 5 books for at least five weeks. They will have also completed the Phase 5 Set 5 fluency assessment and achieved a reading speed of at least 60wpm (words per minute) and accuracy of at least 90%.

Little Wandle Fluency teaches all aspects of reading using vibrant, diverse and engaging chapter books created by contemporary authors and illustrators. Each book has been carefully devised to support children as they progress in reading fluency through Year 2; making sure every child can become a confident, fluent and motivated reader.

Changing Reading Books

Reading books will be changed on Monday, however as the Fluency books are chapter books and much longer, they will be changed every two weeks.
